What is a Chase Ride?
The most important point is that they are not a race! Riders self assess their fitness and how hard they can ride. They gather in a group of similar pace with a nominated group leader (with 2 way radio) who knows the route, concept etc. This group of similar fitness rides around the course together. For this reason some call them Group Social Rides. They are a serious social ride but unless a rider asks to drop off the pace, the group should ride together. Faster riders wait for the group if they get ahead. Slower riders push hard so they don't hold the whole group up. If a rider decides to drop out then they should make sure they let the group know. At OHV the loop is around a 8-10km XC race track and groups of differing pace will set off at different times. After a lap or so riders will become familiar with the trail.
The intention is to finish the ride at about the same time which adds that extra team element to the emotion of the day. Then afterwards riders can catch up with new and old friends and to have a yarn about the day around the BBQ. Those who have ridden a Chase Ride know that this format keeps you motivated to stay with your group. Because the group contains riders of varying size, age, gender, experience, skill level etc then they are a great way to improve your riding, have fun and learn. There is not usually a lot of sitting around waiting in G3 and above.
Which Group?
This is a great point of discussion because no-one knows! That is half the excitement of the day. Not knowing if you'll be blasting ahead, hanging smooth in the group or dragging behind.
Group 6: First time riders, or spouse/partner of E-G5 riders and any kids. This is a group who will be out to have a ride and will go where it is safe and fun at a pace that the group is comfortable with. Participation is the key!
Group 5: Beginners, juniors and slow riders. Specifically slow social ride pace with lots of stopping. 45-50 minute laps.
Group 4: Social riders who have better skills and fitness than G5. Recover and regroup at top of most climbs. Working on bigger lungs! No real rest stops. 40-50 minute laps.
Group 3: Faster social pace riders. This is the 1st group that gets faster. Few rest breaks. 30-40 minute laps.
Group 2: Above social pace. You wouldn't expect a normal group of riders to ride at this pace. 25-30 minute laps.
Group 1: XC race riders with very good fitness and skills. Fast! 23-25 minute laps. Race experience and good fitness. No recovery breaks needed. Able to achieve the odd podium results. If you have never been looking at a podium before, you probably don't belong here.
Elite: Enough said! Sub 23 minute laps.
